Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments

This is a great craft for your children to do while on Christmas break. Each one is unique and can be personalized. A word of caution, these salt dough Christmas Ornaments look like cookies so watch that small children don’t try to eat them.

INGREDIENTS:

1 ½ cups of salt
6 cups of flour
2 ¼ cups of water
Food Coloring
Cookie Cutters
Craft Paints, Glitter Glue, Sequence, Wiggly Eyes, Etc.
Ribbon or Ornament Hook
10d 2-7/8 Nails

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a medium to large size bowl, mix your salt, flour and water.You can add food coloring to your mixture if you want all of your ornaments to be one color.

2.  If you want to make a few different colors of ornaments, divide your dough into as many balls as you need (one ball per color).

3. Kneed the dough until smooth (you may want to wear gloves so the food coloring doesn’t stain your hands).

4. On a clean surface, roll out your dough. Make it about 1/4 inch thick.

5. Now it is time to make your ornaments. Using cookie cutters, press the shape you want into your dough until your cookie cutter goes all the way through the dough (you can also use a toothpick to trace around shapes like a hand or foot).

6. Using your nail, make a hole in the top of your dough shape. Make sure your hole is big enough to thread ribbon through but small enough that the hole won’t break easily. Be careful not to make the hole too close to the edge or it could break.

7. Turn your oven on to 225 degrees. On a cookie sheet, bake your ornaments for about 30 minutes. Watch them carefully so they do not burn.

8. Let your ornaments cool on wax paper for at least an hour.

9. Once your ornaments are completely cool, it’s time to decorate them. You can paint them, put designs on them with your glitter glue or decorate them anyway you want.

10. Thread ribbon (or ornament hook) through the hole and tie a bow.
